Sea, the Great National Purpose

At a time when it was approved the national strategy for the sea, document essential for this to become effectively the National Plan, it is important to reflect on a local perspective.
Each of us has to ask yourself: what can I do? Where I can be important in this direction that the country wants to follow? Is this a question so hard to answer?
I don't think so!
If we accept that all parties do, it's easy to see that any our action will have repercussions in the process. If each of us does ECO of little, or a lot, you know, we believe that we will end up with scourges as the waste in the sea, or, in another framework, with the non-sustainable use of marine resources.
The project Life Eco Compatible gives us an opportunity to be part of this chain of change. Be stakeholder of this project answers the question: what can I do?

Director of the Madeira Natural Park

The project Life Eco compatible has the sponsorship of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic

Since August 2013, the project Life Eco compatible has the sponsorship of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic.
Upon coming to the Nature Reserve of Selvagens Islands in last July, His Excellency the President was aware of this project noting the presence of in situ ocean waste resulting from anthropogenic action deciding to support good practice Eco Compatible by giving your individual support and institutional support to this project.
This support is highly relevant and reinforces and recognize all the work that  we have been developing to the date setting an example and providing a mark in comprehensive involvement of the entire society.

Our life insurance, our natural capital: an EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020

On January 28 was published in the Official Journal of the European Union the opinion of the European Economic and Social Committee on the ‘Communication from the Commission: Our life insurance, our natural capital: an EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2020’.

In this document we can highlight:

“It is therefore of the greatest importance that the forthcoming political reform processes (e.g. fisheries, agricultural, transport, energy and cohesion policy) be closely linked to the biodiversity strategy.”

“There is a clear need for information and knowledge about biodiversity and its complex interactions with development and employment…”

Part 3 of the communication sets out a framework for action for the next decade, with six targets:

1: Fully implement the Birds and Habitats Directives;
2: Maintain and restore ecosystems and their services;
3: Increase the contribution of agriculture and forestry to maintaining and enhancing biodiversity;
4: Ensure the sustainable use of fisheries resources;
5: Combat invasive alien species; and
6: Help avert global biodiversity loss.

Here you can find the full document.

Project Overview

The ECO COMPATIBLE LIFE project (LIFE09 INF/PT/00045) was proposed by the Natural Park Service of Madeira (SPNM) – Regional Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources, in partnership with the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) and is co-funded by LIFE + Information and Communication – European Community financial instrument to support the European ecological network – Natura 2000 sites.

With the title “Communicating to the socio-economic sustainability, human benefit and biodiversity in Natura 2000 sites in the Madeira archipelago” and the acronym ECO COMPATIBLE, this project began in October 2010 and ends in September 2014.

The main objective is to promote and enhance the compatibility between the development of socio-economic and cultural activities such as fishing, agriculture, nature tourism, the management of nature reserves, hazardous areas, habitats and species listed in the annexes of the directives which support Natura 2000.

This project is part of the communication and information strategy of the financial instrument of the European Community LIFE + for the European ecological network – Natura 2000 through the transmission and delivery of information to the public as well as better implementation, management and conservation of Natura 2000 sites.

Total budget: 607,792 euros

LIFE contribution: 285,646 euros

Entities involved:

The partners of this project are the Natural Park Service of Madeira (SPNM) and the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA).

LIFE

life_logo_450pixel

The LIFE programme is the EU’s funding instrument for the environment. The general objective of LIFE is to contribute to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental policy and legislation by co-financing pilot or demonstration projects with European added value.

The legal basis for LIFE+ is the Regulation (EC) No 614/2007. LIFE+ covers both the operational expenditure of DG Environment and the co-financing of projects.

The Nature & Biodiversity component will co-finance best practice or demonstration projects that contribute to the implementation of the Birds and Habitats Directives and the Natura 2000 network. In addition, it will co-finance innovative or demonstration projects that contribute to the implementation of the objectives of Commission Communication (COM (2006) 216 final) on "Halting the loss of biodiversity by 2010 – and beyond". At least 50percent of the LIFE+ budget for project co-financing must be dedicated to LIFE+ Nature and Biodiversity projects.

Projects financed by LIFE+ must satisfy the following criteria:

Projects must be of EU interest, making a significant contribution to the achievement of the general objective of LIFE+;
They must be technically and financially coherent and feasible and provide value for money;
Where possible, projects financed by LIFE+ should promote synergies between different priorities under the 6th Environmental Action Programme
